Can I Transfer My Online Credits to Other Schools?

As a result of the convenience offered, online learning has never been so popular. Not only are online students able to obtain qualifications in a wide range of subjects from the comfort of their own home, but they are also able to do so at times which suit them, allowing them to complete their studies around their additional commitments. However, at times, a student may wish to cease learning online and commence with their studies on-campus. There are many who, although wish to make this change, will refrain from doing so, fearing that they will be unable to transfer their credits obtained through online learning to a traditional school.

Transferring your credits is not a simple process and can often take a considerable amount of time however, it is possible. By compiling thorough research into how and where you wish to continue with your studies, you can gain a smooth transition from online to on-campus, allowing you to continue with your studies. Some students may opt for online learning until they are completely aware of what path they want their career to go in. Not only can this help them make an educated decision, but it can also help take off years from their degree program. Students that possessed low grades from high school may opt to complete part of an online program in order to improve their grades before enrolling at a traditional school.

If your original plan is to complete part of an online program before moving on-campus, it is important that you plan ahead in order to smoothly transition from one school to another. By doing so, you can plan your course to fulfill your credit requirements for the new school. Although your online credits can be transferred to a traditional school, this does not guarantee that your credits can be applied to your specific degree. Some traditional schools may not accept credits earned from subjects that are not directly linked to the major the student wishes to study. Furthermore, some schools will not allow students to transfer more then 30-50 of their total credits. As a result, students who have already studied for 2 years, for example, may find they are obliged to repeat some classes.

By speaking with a guidance counselor regarding your plan, you will be able to show a prospective school that you desire to study at their institution, and that you are willing to have your credits transferred in order to benefit your education. An advisor will be able to help you with the process which in turn, can help eliminate issues which may arise from completing the transfer individually. When completing the transfer, the student will be required to complete a form to identify transfer credit eligibility, or alternatively, they can contact an advisor who may be able to increase the likelihood of the credits being successfully transferred.

It is an inevitability of life that our initial plans can change which for some online students, may result in a desire to transfer to a traditional school. In order to make this transition successfully, a clear outline of your career goals will be required, in addition to thorough research into the credit transfer process and details of your credits earned and what you wish to study. It is only with thorough and careful planning that you will able to make a smooth transition in order to commence with your education.
