If you are looking to sand down wood and/or other materials for finishing purposes you are looking for a high quality belt sander. With a belt sander a seamless loop of sandpaper is mounted on an electrical motor that turns a pair of drums. Wide belt sanders come in varying forms to cater to different job types. With a hand-held belt sander the sander is moved over the material or it is stationary and the material is moved to the sanding belt. Stationary sanders are generally mounted on a work bench, often combined with a disc sander, and referred to as bench sanders.

Most belt sanders continue to grind without clogging. The small grooves in the sand paper open up as they go around the arc of the drive wheel.
Belt sanders vary in size ranging from small handheld units to units that are wide enough to sand a 4 by 8 foot sheet of plywood. Belt sander can even reach as tall as 1.2 meters and 70 centimeters long.
Wide belt sanders are the industry standard for many wood and furniture shops because they can sand a surface with ease and uniformity in less time than traditional hand sanders. Wide belt sanders can also be used for thickness sanding in place of a planer eliminating the risk of ugly tear out.
