A swing measures the size of a drill press. The swing is twice the throat distance. This is the distance from the center of the spindle to the edge of the pillar that is closest.
The drill’s table can be adjusted vertically and is moved by a rack and pinion. With older models, the table must be lifted and clamped into position by the operator. In some cases the table rotates perpendicular to the column. This occurs when the table is offset from the spindle’s axis.

To change the speed on the drill press you must manually move a belt across a stepped pulley arrangement. To increase the speed range, some drill presses add a third stepped pulley. Modernized drill presses use a stepped-pulley system along with a variable-speed motor. A wide speed range is given to some machine shop drill presses that are equipped with a continuously variable transmission. These machines have the ability to change speed while the machine is running.
Drill presses are used for honing, polishing and sanding. To sand and hone using the press, you must mount a sanding drum or honing wheel along with other rotating accessories in the chunk. There are instances when the chunk arbor dislodges during operation so be careful.
There are a number of advantages for using a press drill over a hand-held drill:
• On a press drill, a vise or clamp is used to hold the work. This secures the operation.
• The holes are drilled accurately and consistently since the angle of the spindle is fixed relative to the table.
• The motors in drill presses are much more powerful than those found in hand-held drills. This speeds up drilling with smaller bits. It also allows for larger drill bits to be used.
• The operator has mechanical advantage due to the movement of the chuck and spindle which is by a lever working on a rack and pinion.
• The drill is applied to the workpiece with less effort.
