The New Infrastructure No Infrastructure

CrossRealms, Inc. has been engaged with many clients in the past three years to upgrade and/or replace their existing Infrastructure based on end of life situations or improvements needed to meet new demands and or new applications. One of the issues that CrossRealms, Inc. engineers dealt with was the true 'Return on Investment' for such projects and whether they were genuinely needed or merely done because that was how it had been done in the past.

For clients that are heavily invested in Citrix, CrossRealms, Inc.'s engineers have switched direction, now preferring to build a very light Infrastructure footprint. This change is due to the following factors:

1- Advanced virtualization technologies, such as Remote Desktop from Citrix, removed the need for the users to run their applications directly on their workstations. This created an advantage by allowing the centralization of all applications and servers, thus lowering the physical space requirements for an otherwise distributed system.

2- Centralized computer systems require fewer resources to manage since all of the equipment resides in the same space. Because of this, large Wide Area Network pipes are no longer needed and a business's operational expenses are lowered.

3- Private Cloud and Public Cloud offerings can now be leveraged since a centralized environment can easily be managed and/or migrated using currently available management tools and processes.

4- Advances in wireless technology, if deployed correctly, can provide the users with the necessary bandwidth to run their applications smoothly, in addition to allowing complete mobility within the office.

5- Office openings and closing no longer require a huge footprint of Infrastructure gear and cabling that could run the business into the millions of dollars.

The combination of the above factors and the cost savings and speed to build of a lighter Infrastructure are extremely compelling and could signal the end of a distributed Infrastructure and the end of expensive forklift upgrades and build-outs whenever the business requires IT to make a change.
