More and more today than ever before there has been a great increase in children with obesity. You see it in our schools, in our neighborhoods and at our stores. Children are eating unhealthy foods, practicing unhealthy lifestyles and cultivating dangerous habits. It is not only the responsibility of parents, but also our schools to insure that our children are learning the proper foods to eat and the risk of doing otherwise. There are children experiencing heart disease and diabetes. Teenagers are victims of high blood pressure and toddlers are morbidly obese.

It is the responsibility of adults to change this. Children do not have the capability to decide what they are eating unless they are looking at a fast food menu. At school kids eat what the cafeteria is serving (often greasy foods and processed snacks) or they are given packed lunches that may be unhealthy as well. The problem isn’t that parents are the schools are purposely harming kids. The problem is that many people are unaware, don’t have the time, or don’t have a budget for eating healthy. There is tons of knowledge on the market regarding the benefits of eating right and tips on how to do so. We’ve seen the videos, heard the advertisements and read the articles. In, fact, we’ve come across so many different sources of information we find ourselves not knowing what to believe.

Consumer Health Awareness is an organization on a mission to enlighten and inform. This organization sets out to do one thing, save lives. Knowledge is of the greatest power. When we learn of the foods that are right and wrong for our health we can begin to influence change in our diets. Our children deserve a shot at healthy and long lives while we still have an important enough influence to ensure that their lives are off to a healthy start.

We can start by replacing potato chips with fruit and cookies with vegetables. Make meals creative. Find out what your kids like and put a healthy spin on it. If pizza is a must, throw veggies in the mix. If they children have a sweet tooth, show how fruit and natural, low fat ice creams can make for a great desert. Eating healthy doesn’t nearly have to mean eating dull. We truly can have it all. Show your kids the fun ways to eat healthy. Help kids to understand that eating healthy can be the cool thing to do and encourage them to start a trend. It seems that often time’s peers are the greatest influencers. If we encourage our kids to share with their friends about the importance of eating healthy there is no telling where our kids may end up. The sky is the limit.

Let’s start our quest for healthy, happy kids today. It is worth the extra mile and the pay off can be life changing. Let’s teach our kids of how to eat and stay healthy while we practice what we preach.
