The sciatic nerve is one

of the many nerves in your body. It is located at the lower back and goes down to your legs. More specifically, it begins at the lumbar area. When the sciatic nerve is irritated, you will experience pain in that part of the body. This pain is called sciatica. Sciatica can be very painful because the sciatic nerve is very long and large. In fact it is the longest nerve in the body. Sciatica is caused by nerve irritation. This can be caused from many sources. A bulging or herniated disc, a pinched nerve, trauma, injury, pregnancy, disc degeneration, a narrow foramen and an infection are just some of the reasons why your sciatic nerve be irritated, thus causing you pain.
