Choosing a new pet, whether it is a puppy or kitten, should be fun and exciting for all the family. But it is also a serious consideration and not something that should be taken lightly.

Presumably you have already had a good think about what kind of commitment is required of you now and in the long term.

For the short term there are many considerations. A new pet will need time to settle in, affection, care and patience. It will be cute and sweet, but it may have accidents and cause a degree of chaos in the house – less so if you develop a strict training programme.

When it grows up your pet will be less demanding, it will still need regular care and walks. The family will have grown used to it by the time it is an adult dog, and it might not be so cute and sweet, but it will still need love and affection.

At the end of your pet's life there might be potential health problems and the chance that the family will have to make a difficult decision. While this may seem a long way away, it should still be considered.

The best way to keep your new puppy or kitten healthy, fit and active will also ensure that you and your family have the best possible relationship with it and can be spared needless heartache and expense.

Get your pet from a reputable breeder – avoid puppy farms like the plague and pet shops too. Choose from the litter wisely – the kids might have fallen in love with the fearful shy puppy in the corner, but will that grow into a nervous snappy dog?

Try to maintain a consistent routine when the new arrival is at home. Buy good pet food. Get a training programme introduced because a dog that knows its place is a secure, happy and safe dog.

Get the whole family involved in feeding and walking or playtime. Family walks and playtime is good for everyone, and your pet will love the company.
