What is Spot UV?
You have undoubtedly come across matte business cards.
You have undoubtedly heard of glossy business cards.
Well, spot UV cards are a combination of both.
In stead of affixing a gloss (also known as UV) coating to the entire card, it is is merely applied in limited places, as set by the designer.
Often, it's used on the company name, logo, or other vital graphic element. Other times you'll see it applied in an original pattern (for example, fleur de lis, lines, diagonal stripes, plaid, in circles, in a spiral, etc.).
The options are unlimited.
Spot UV can be employed on both the front and back of your business card. Also it can often be applied to various card stocks including standard matte, silk cards, and more.
Benefits of Spot UV
Spot uv is impossible to ignore. It yields both a visible and textural experience distinctive from other business card types. Its nearest comparison might be foil stamped business cards, whereby foil is similarly applied to designated areas of the card for textural and visual effect.
UV is a first choice for designers due to its unique appearance and invitation for ingenuity.
Recipients are sure to be wowed as well, delivering a lasting impression.
How Do You Create a Spot UV Business Card?
The process of creating a spot uv print project isn't especially difficult. Actually, the setup is essentially the same as other card designs - but with one more step.
To explain: a typical business card calls for the the purhcaser to upload a single design file (for each side of the business card). This file displays the design that will be applied to the card.
With spot UV business cards, this same file is uploaded. But in addition, you need to present a mask file. A mask file is merely another file indicating where the spot uv should be applied.
A mask file is only black and white. Always. For a full color card as well. In whichever places there there is black, the uv coating will be added. Wherever it's white, no gloss is applied.
In other words, everything in the original file that is to be printed without uv is removed from the mask file. So, if you want to add UV to your logo, but not your contact info, the mask file contains just your logo in 100% black.
