There has been a recent study released that states that social media outlets tend to have more noticed activity on Friday’s namely after work. To this I respond, “Well, ya think?” (in the most sarcastic tone possible). If any of these social media users are at all like me (and I think it’s safe to assume that most of them are) then Fridays tend to be a day to rejoice, unwind and reconnect. The best place to go to do something of the sort, you wonder? Well, I go straight to my networks, of course.
I believe that it’s fair to attribute the rise in social network activity on Friday’s to the fact that Friday is generally the day of the week when everyone is looking for everyone else in search of cool things to do. The quickest way to find all of your people is through your favorite social network. I’ll use my life as the basis for this example just for the sake of argument. I clock out of work at about 5pm Friday afternoon. The first thing I do when walking out of the building is grab my cell phone. I’m not grabbing the cell phone to make a phone call, for goodness sakes no, never that! I’m grabbing my cell phone to log in to Facebook and Twitter to see what all the cool kids are doing.

I start with a timeline glance giving it a quick once over to see if there are any @ mentions I should know about or if there are any arrows pointing to my username. After assessing this I actively begin to read. John Doe is heading to the movies and Jane Dane is opting for the beach (I use these code names as to protect the privacy of my follower and friends). The social networks are a live and constantly updated social calendar. In addition to making plans, Friday’s also offer a moment to check-in with those that I have perhaps neglected all week. I believe Rick Liebling, director of digital strategy at Coyne PR said it best stating “It’s a matter of people finally pushing past the work week and coasting toward the weekend, picking their head up a bit to see what’s going on and what their friends are up to.” Yes, Rick, exactly.
All of this reasoning surrounding people being more active on social networks on Fridays is fairly obvious but here’s a tidbit of information that proves to be interesting. According to Adam Bain, Twitter Chief Revenue Officer, though most people flock to Twitter on Friday, Facebook gets most of its activity on Thursday. Hmm, I wonder why that is? What is it about Thursday’s and Facebook? Can’t really use my life as an assessment for this finding because I’m not exactly sure that in terms of my own FB usage this is the case but this is interesting to know, nonetheless.
Listen, I’m no analyst or anything but the rise in use of social networks come the weekend seem to be a trend that will remain fairly consistent. Now that we know this, I’d recommend that those in the business of marketing and advertising capitalize on what has now been confirmed. It’s Friday, advertisers, chop chop!
