Whether you have an internal hard drive of 500 GB or 1 TB, you will run out of disk space. Why? the number of your favorite movies, music, photos and other digital data is on the rise and eventually you will find that there not enough space to store more. To cope with the situation, either you need to buy an internal hard drive or an external hard disk. In this article we will discuss how to partition an external hard drive and store your digital contents in a more organized way.

You may wonder why it is important to partition an external hard drive. You can use your external hard drive as a single volume and store your data. But if it is partitioned you can save your movies, music and other contents in different volume and access it easily. Even you can also install a separate operating system as an alternative of your existing operating system. To partition an external hard drive you can get in touch with an online computer support provider or do it on your own.

Let's see how to partition an external hard drive in Windows. If you want to partition an old external drive then it is recommended to back up your data. Otherwise, existing data on the hard drive will be lost. You need to log in through an Administrator account and then connect your external hard drive with your computer with a USB cable. Right-click on My Computer icon on the desktop and click on 'Manage.' This will open computer management window. Click on 'Disk Management' and this will display a list of all the storage volumes that your PC is currently having.

The external hard drive will be listed at the bottom. You need to right-click on it and choose 'Delete Volume.' Once the process is complete right click on the unallocated disk space and choose 'New Simple Volume.' Your computer will now ask you to specify the amount of disk space from the unallocated total space. You need to assign the amount of your choice. You need to specify the value in MBs or GBs and provide a volume label as well. After doing this, check the 'Format Volume' check box and also choose the file system for format and erase all existing data (if have). Click 'Next' and then 'Finish' button. You need to repeat the same procedure for creating more volumes.

If you are using Mac OS X then too you can partition the external hard drive very easily. The procedure is almost same. You need to launch 'Disk Utility' and then choose 'Volume Scheme' and then choose name and file format.

Author Resource:- For computer troubleshooting you can consult computer repair services companies. There are many such service providers that offer round the clock tech support at a very attractive price.
