In disputing a credit agency, a letter that details your discrepancy and requests for necessary action to be taken to rectify the situation is your weapon of choice. You want to write a letter that is thorough, professional, knowledgeable and assured. Your credit letter is a vital tool as it is used to right any wrongs and clears any misunderstanding surrounding your credit. There is nothing of greater importance than your credit standing as a consumer. You credit can potentially affect where you live, your insurance, your loan leverage and even your employment. It is essential to ensure that all things are accurate and up to date with your credit history so that you may remain in good standing as a consumer or job candidate on the market.

The great news is that under the Fair Credit Reporting Act the credit reporting company and the person or organization that provides information about you to a credit reporting company are responsible for correcting incomplete or inaccurate information in your report. The credit reporting company then has 30 days to investigate and address your discrepancy. If it is decided that a mistake was made on your report the company will likely remove the mistake or alter your report with the new information. In this instance, you want to continuously check with the reporting company to ensure that the situation has been taken care of. If it is found that the reporting company doesn’t see any error in their reports you may file an appealing letter. You may also add a statement to your credit report about the issue at hand to serve as a FYI for any parties that may use your credit report for final decision making.
