Should You Bet on NFL Football Early or Late in the Season?

There also is a widely held perception that when it comes to NFL betting, gamblers hold an edge over bookmakers early in the season. For years it's been said that oddsmakers are more at risk earlier in the year as the teams are new. So what should you do?

Oddsmakers work with the same information as the bettors. Sometimes it's just a matter of interpretation. In the case of NFL betting, you sometimes have teams with new coaches and--because of trades, free agency or injuries--new quarterbacks. Exhibition matches cannot be a bench mark for learning betting strategies as the best players are seldom exposed to the game. So you must start making reviews based on projections rather than past performances. But the oddsmakers and the players are in the same spot - there is no inherent edge early in the NFL betting season. Sometimes people just pick winners. That's important to remember. Technically, the point spread tends to make each game a 50/50 proposition so there are likely to be times when players pick more champions than losers.

When 14 to 15 matches of NFL is played over the weekend there is a probability that 5 to 6 games will remain undecided. For some cause, those game aren't specifically attractive, be it the matchup or that people don't observe any edge in the number. Those games don't progress. Four to five games split because of two-way action. And next there are a handful of games--let's say four--where the majority of the action is on one team, where the betting is very one-sided. It concludes in one-sided game. If the bookie splits them, he does good. If he goes 3-1, he does great; if he goes 4-0, he does certainly fantastic; if he goes 1-3, that's not so good; if he goes 0-4, that's a disaster.

Still, some professional gamblers don't play NFL football for several reasons. For novices, there aren't enough games. There is no point to analyze the trend. Second, you can't turn the money over fast enough to get a decent rate of return because you only get to select from 13-16 games a week and each team only plays 16 games. These bettors gamble on baseball or professional basketball. Most sports gamblers need the guidance of a sports handicapper who can supply to them football picks that will help them increase their odds of winning.
