Good Business Card Design: Your Bridge to your Customers

The business card actually serves as your face in the market. This is why it is important that your cards reinforce the image of your business. At first glance, they have to tell your customers and prospects who you are and what your business does. Follow the 1 minute rule. In one minute or less, your business cards have to communicate your message and contact details to your target audience. No beating around the bush. Just plainly communicate your purpose.

Every entrepreneur and professional actually needs to have a business card. Aside from being a contact card, it can also be a mini portfolio that will display your products or the work that you do. When done well, the card can be an effective promotional tool that will help build brand awareness.

This is why you should never take the business cards lightly. They may be small and easily overlooked, but they can be the simple most important device that will help you reach out to your target market. They will be your bridge to your prospects. In the end, they will help generate new customers and increase sales for you.

In designing your cards, it can be tempting to use business card templates that you can download for free over the Internet. But remember that these templates would not give you the freedom to create the design that will best represent you in front of your customers. It's still best to create your own design or hire a graphics designer to do the design for you. They are the expert, after all, so they have the skill, expertise, and knowledge on how to create business cards that produce results.

With an expert's guidance, you can be sure to create cards fit you well. The following are some pointers to help you in the design process:

Before doing anything in your cards, the first thing you need to do is determine the information you want to convey to your target audience. Typically, this would include your contact details such as your phone numbers, address, email, business name, and web site together with your logo and tag line, if you need one. You can also add a list of your products or services, a simple map to your store, or a coupon to add value to your cards.

Next, you would need to decide on the layout. The standard size of business cards in the US is 3¼ inches by 2 inches. It's best to stick with this size to ensure that your cards will fit in any standard card holder. Unless you can be sure that your cards will look so attractive and compelling, it's wise to use the standard size.

You can draft first the layout you want for your cards on a piece of paper before going to the final design. Put all the important details in prominent locations so they can be easily seen.

It's to your best advantage if you can use both sides of your card. The front can contain the important contact details while the back can be designed with additional information. It can be a calendar or a gallery of your artwork, whatever you want to put at the back to perk up a notch the value of your card.

Even if you design your cards on your own, it's still important to hire a good printer. In doing so, you can be sure that your cards are as effective, compelling and keepers as possible.
