If you're thinking about becoming a phlebotomist, you should know that there are many benefits of choosing a phlebotomy career. As you probably already know, a phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood from patients, for blood testing and/or for blood donating, to ensure that there is a supply of blood on hand for medical procedures and emergency victims. Of course, it is not something most patients and donors look forward to, but it is a vital part of our health care system.

The health and well-being of countless people will depend on your ability to do this important job.

A Career in Demand
Since phlebotomists provide a number of vital services in practically every clinic, hospital, doctor's office, long-term care center and other medical facility, this is a career that is in high demand, and it should remain so for the foreseeable future. The following are some of the important duties that phlebotomists provide:

* Cleaning and sterilizing equipment
* Explaining procedures to patients
* Preparing stains and reagents
* Updating patient records
* Sending fecal and urine samples to lab for testing
* Taking patients' blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate

The Ability to See Results Quickly
Another one of the benefits of choosing a phlebotomy career is that you can get in and out of school quickly, so you can start working and earning a steady paycheck right away. As long as you have a high school diploma or GED, you can begin an accredited phlebotomist program, which you should be able to complete in a year or less if you attend school full time. There are even accelerated programs that can be completed in as little as one semester. Some phlebotomists also get certified by the American Medical Technologists, American Society for Phlebotomy Technicians or American Society for Clinical Pathology, although this is not required. Being a Certified Phlebotomy Technician or Registered Phlebotomy Technician can increase your career options, so it's worth considering.

If becoming a phlebotomist sounds like a good idea, you're in luck. Yet another benefit of the career is that there are numerous schools all over the nation offering the training you need.
