The Graveness Of Depression

Everybody is bound to feel sad and in despair at times. It is a normal day to day experience because of the fact that we get easily affected by certain happenings, human as we are. Most critical occurrences that result to such emotion are losses of loved ones, unemployment or getting fired from an occupation, and rejection or disownment by family members. Although these may be among the most terrible of times, people are expected to at least leap over them and move on. Failure to get over these circumstance leads to a condition called depression.


Feelings of extreme and prolonged sadness, usually lasting for more than two weeks is a disorder called depression. It results from the inability to cope with the cause of misery. This comes in congruence with weakness and hopelessness. There is a thin line that separates normal sadness from that of depression. In other words, medical treatment is necessary in facing such illness. Specific medications might be prescribed to help in the recovery.

Manifestations of depression differ among people. There are however commonalities in most cases. It comes up after an incidental crisis in life and often makes the affected person gain a dreary concept of the world and everything in it.


There is a marked deterioration of concentration, as well as absence of interest in activities of daily living. Changes in appetite and sudden decrease or increase in weight may also be evident. Along with these, sleep problems may arise like insomnia, oversleeping, and bruxism. The individual is either easily irritated and agitated or always exhibiting lethargy, and there is eminence in emotions like guilt, self-loathing, and worthlessness.


If you happen to encounter somebody who is eliciting the said signs and symptoms, it is vital to be concerned about their wellbeing. He or she may be experiencing extreme anguish and desperation, and to them, suicide may just feel like an exit or escape from the pain. It is advised to be keen and observant of suicidal behaviors and verbalizations because these are warning signs of the grave possibility of suicide. The most overt indications are statements about killing oneself and dying are. Some do not express themselves too clearly but they do give out vague signals by writing farewell messages to people close to their hearts. Other observable hints are sudden shifting of moods from being miserable to composed and blissful.
