The phlebotomy school admission requirements may vary from one institution to another. There are many different schooling options for future phlebotomists including community colleges, technical institutes and vocational schools. Typically, there aren't any really strict admission requirements for phlebotomy students, which is why many people choose this path as they are considering their career options. Still, it's a good idea to know what you have to expect.

Typical Admission Requirements

Most community colleges and technical or vocational schools only require that incoming students are at least 18 years of age and have completed a high school diploma or GED. Community colleges will probably require that you start your program in the fall or spring, although some schools may also offer summer phlebotomy courses or alternative semester schedules. It is important to know, however, that many schools require criminal background checks in order to comply with various state statutes or clinical affiliation agreements. There may be some prerequisite courses as well, but students are typically accepted to the program first and then take these classes during the first semester. The practical experience component of the program typically comes last.

Other Resources

The Bureau of Labor Statistics can provide a wealth of additional information about phlebotomy careers, including the courses that you are required to take, the job requirements and the average salary, as these often vary by state, just like the admission requirements often vary by school. You can also contact local community colleges and technical/vocational schools for more information about their specific requirements and the structure of their phlebotomy program. Programs may last from 8 to 24 months depending on their structure and whether you attend full time, so you'll want to learn more about any particular program you're applying to before planning your next two years.

Certification Exam

Even more important than schooling is certification-you can't work in the field if you aren't certified. This is what your schooling all leads up to. You'll need to know more than just proper venipuncture techniques. But luckily, there are many good books and online resources to help you study.
