Floor Tile Manufacturers

Before tile can be purchased from a distributor or retailer, it must be manufactured. Floor tiles are produced by manufacturers and then sold to wholesalers, importers and distributors. Natural stone tiles that are used for flooring are normally crafted by manufacturers. In quarries in Turkey, Italy and a few other countries, natural stones are extracted from the surface of the earth. Stones like marble and travertine are extracted in large segments and cut into smaller slabs. These stones are both in the limestone family of sedimentary rocks. Due to their natural composition, marble and travertine each have distinctive color palettes. Marble is usually white with unique colored veins that vary in consistency and quantity. Travertine has a beige color and also may have light or dark colored veining.

The veining of marble and travertine can be displayed differently depending on the cut that the floor tile manufacturer employs. Vein cut stones are made along the vein and exposes the veins in a linear way. This cut allows you to visually follow the vein across the tile. If a manufacturer uses a cross cut, also known as a Fleuri cut, the blade cuts across the vein. This type of cut makes the stone tile veins appear to have a slightly circular ring pattern that seem more irregular than when a stone is vein cut.

After the stone slab has been vein or cross cut, the manufacturer will then cut that slab into smaller pieces. The accuracy of this process is very important and will give each segment uniformity and consistency. Stone can be cut into any shape or size. Rectangular and squared cuts are very popular because they may be laid and arranged for installation easily. Geometrically, the compilation of these shapes over an area will cover the entire space. The dimensions of natural stones must be standardized so that there are no problems during installation. The slightest error in measurement can throw your project off.

The edges of a tile are another consideration of the floor tile manufacturer. The style of edge on a natural stone helps to define the character of the room or outdoor area. Straight, 90° edges have sharp corners that many not be great in every application. Pillowed edges are just the opposite, offering a rounded shape. Chiseled edge stones can give each stone more warmth and character by adding a rustic element. Tumbled edged stones can look antique and have a rough texture. Beveled edges have a soft but geometric look that is not as harsh as a straight edge. The type of edge you choose can make all the difference in your finished design.

Floor tile manufactures will also alter the texture and finish of a tile using other methods. Honing tile gives it a smooth matte finish with little shine. Polished tiles look shiny and feel smooth. Tumbled tiles appear and feel close to the natural features of the stone. Brushed tiles are rough and dull colored. To protect tiles from staining, a manufacturer will seal the tile. Sealing fills in the holes and spaces on the surface of the stone. Marble and travertine are porous so they suck up liquids easily.

Stoneline Group has a great business relationship with floor tile manufactures in Turkey and can help you to decide on the right flooring material.
