Getting older may bring one wisdom but it comes with its own set of challenges. Senior family members require a special type of security care. In many cases there’s no need for an assisted living or nursing home situation; but it’s still important to ensure that elderly relatives has their safety taken care of. Certain precautions can be very helpful for protecting seniors and ensuring their home security.

One of the greatest risks for seniors is a home fire. In fact, Americans over retirement age are some of the people most at risk from fires. There are a few different explanations for this. Old age often results in decreased mobility, which can make an escape difficult without enough early warning. Certain medicines that are essential for certain conditions can impede quick decision-making. Older citizens are also be more likely to live by themselves, which can mean that no one is there to assist in case of an accident. Thus, a fire alarm should be installed in areas where there is the greatest risk of danger.

The same things that cause fire in most residences cause fires in senior’s homes. Smokers need to carefully dispose of their cigarettes and cigars as improper disposal can ignite a blaze. Kitchen fires due to inattentiveness are among the most common causes of a fire. Improper electrical wiring and poorly maintained electrical appliances can cause electrical fires. Luckily, taking a few precautions can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death by fire.

Smoke alarms are the best way to protect anyone from any sort of harm due to fire. As an early warning system they give people a chance to escape before it’s too dangerous. Most fatalities from fire are actually due to smoke inhalation. A good smoke alarm that is part of an overall home security system has other advantages as well. It should be connected to a monitoring center that is alerted in case of any alarm. They can contact the homeowner and the fire department in the case of any emergency. This added level of protection can help both you and your senior family member sleep easily, knowing that someone is keeping an eye on things. Of course, seniors should also follow the same fire safety precautions as everyone else, including having an escape route already planned out of the home in case of emergency.

The same home alarm system that provides a smoke alarm can also include a burglar alarm. Elderly family members may be vulnerable to break-ins but an alarm system can greatly reduce that risk. Simply displaying decals from a security company can act as a deterrent. Of course, the system itself provides a great deal more protection. It should be an easy to arm and disarm system that protects all entry points to the home. A good system will also be linked up to the same company that monitors the smoke alarms. In case the burglar alarm is triggered they can notify the police as well as the homeowner.

Old age is nothing to fear and no reason to give up independence. However, it is important to consider protection and home security for seniors. It’s easy to greatly reduce the risk of many common dangers.
