Not all people can afford to have a home theater system installed but with the right information, tools and person who knows electronics (if you don't), you can create your own and run away with all those savings. Of course, this is not something you can do without planning. You don't only need materials.
You also need to make a few considerations before you can be sure you're doing the right thing. You can always get someone to help you which means that you don't have to be an expert. As the owner of the home theater system, there are a few basics that you should know before you purchase any piece of equipment.

Space
You must definitely have a room for this if you're thinking of installing a home theater system. This is the most basic of all. Check if there's enough space for everything you're going to need, from HD receivers to your plasma tv to your gear stands etc. Consider the distance that you can allot between your tv and the viewers. You may have the most high-end plasma flat panel on one wall, but if you're going to have to watch a movie with it too close, you won't enjoy the experience. Determine a certain distance that will be comfortable to you while you're viewing.
Safety
You can have the best home theater system in terms of equipment and furniture, but if your safety is at stake, of what use is it? Try to hire an expert to run a dedicated line from your breaker or get a new breaker specifically for this theater's requirements to make sure you're not exposing yourself to fire hazards. Another thing to consider is the heat. See to it that you have a fan connected to a vent.
Speakers
One of the most important components of your home theater system will be your speakers. Bad speakers defeat the whole purpose of the system, thus, investing in good ones is always essential. Each home theater system should have a center channel speaker, front left and right speakers, surround speakers and woofers. These will work together to create the sound experience that you are looking for. The speaker's position will also affect its sound quality. For example, the center speaker will do well under your TV but if your screen is mounted on a wall, you can have your center channel speaker mounted on the same wall as well or, better yet, have it built into wall.
