Join a Fitness Camp to Reduce Overweight and Obese

Prevalence of overweight and obese individuals in U.S. has continued to rise over the years. World health organization (WHO) has defined overweight as a BMI equal to or more than 25 and “obesity” as a BMI equal to or more than 30. According to WHO prediction by 2015, nearly 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese.

It is shocking news to hear that by 2015, nearly 2.3 billion adults will be overweight. But why do people gain weight. What causes obesity and overweight?

The fundamental reason for obesity and overweight is the energy imbalance between calories consumed in one hand and calories expended on the other hand. Global increase in overweight and obesity are due to various factors including:

• Due to high intake of energy dense foods that are high in fat and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients;

• Decrease in physical activity due to increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation and increase in urbanization.

It is important that people start taking care of their eating habits. They should start eating healthy food. If they do not control their weight it can lead to chronic illness which can ruin their life. Before it becomes too late they should start taking care of their body.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human services (HHS) and Department of Agriculture (USDA) offer tips for healthy eating:

Focus on fruits:

Eat different types of fruits rather than fruit juices. For a 200 calorie diet, you will need 2 cups of fruit each day.

Vary your veggies:

Eat more dark green vegetables, orange veggies, beans and peas.

Get your calcium rich foods:

Each day, drink 3 cups of low fat or fat free milk. You can either go in for equivalent amount of low-fat yogurt or low fat cheese each day.

Make half your grains whole:

Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pasta each day.

Go lean with protein:

Choose lean meats and poultry. Bake it, broil it and grill it.

Limit saturated fats:

Get less than 10 percent of your calories from saturated fatty acids.

Limit salt:

Get less than 2,300 mg of sodium each day.
