Google Promises Gmail Fix

If you were one of 150,000 unlucky Gmail users you recently attempted to log into your email only to find that your e-mail, attachments, and Google Chat logs were all gone. Yikes! (To say the very least). According to Google less than 0.08% of all Gmail users were affected by this bug. Less than 0.08% probably does seem a bit insignificant until you find yourself one of the 0.08. I can just imagine the immediate sinking feeling when met with a welcome message by Gmail after attempting to sign in.

What would have become of all of my things? All of those documents that I didn’t trust on my computer but I trusted it on the web. All of the emails, the updated resumes, the contacts, the memories, what would come of my past life? It absolutely never would have occurred to me to back up my back up.

Here is the good news for that 0.08%: according to Google’s Apps Status Dashboard Google engineers were working to restore full access. Affected users would be temporarily unable to sign in while Google repaired their accounts. For many Gmail users this simply isn’t comforting enough. How temporary is temporary, they wonder? No definitely answer has been provided.

Google also wrote that “For those Gmail users reporting missing messages, our engineers are working to restore them as soon as possible”; better news, but still not great. How are users to trust that ALL messages will really be restored here?

Ben Treynor of Google explains that “To protect your information from these unusual bugs, we also back it up to tape. Since the tapes are offline, they’re protected from such software bugs. But restoring data from them also takes longer than transferring your requests to another data center, which is why it’s taken us hours to get the email back instead of milliseconds.”

It is good to know that Google is backing up my back up for me even though I failed to back it up myself. On a recently updated blog Google claims that the problem affected less that 0.08% of users proclaiming instead that only 0.02% of Gmail’s user base saw any affect. 0.02% is admittedly better than 0.08% but significantly worse that 0.00%.

Why so hard on Google, you wonder? I think it’s primarily because I feel like something I’ve put so much trust into has let me down. No, I wasn’t personally affected per se but Google, how could you? You glide in here with an heir of professionalism and top notch service, you earn my trust and loyalty and then you reveal that you have the capability to go and behave like this. Where have your standards gone? I won’t pretend that I’m ready to up and leave now but I will say that we’re almost back to square one and I’m certainly expecting you to earn my trust all over again. I’ve been good to you, Google, I just ask for the same respect in return. I do, however, thank you for attempting to clean up what you messed up. Let’s try not to let it happen again.
