The tech world is always wondering what they can come out with next. Before a new television, cell phone or camera hits the market, there is already one in production that is designed with a feature that will surpass its’ most recent predecessor. Competition is seemingly ongoing, without ceasing…ever! This is great for society because one new development can lead to a world changing innovation. That is the awesomeness of technology and the inventive spirit found in human nature.
This week is no different. Yet another tech laden feature has been incorporated into both spartphones and tablets. Three dimensional effects will now be available on spartphones and tablets. LG has introduced the world to its upcoming line of gadgets that will feature 3-D technology for our viewing pleasure. No doubt, LGs’ competitors will soon follow with smartphones and tablets that will out-perform their offerings.

It seems like the market has been increasingly inundated with the 3-D phenomena over the past few years. With the success of the film Avatar, the entertainment industry flooded the market with an excessive amount of 3-D films in every genre to score big at the box office. It seemed as though there was a high demand for 3-D movies. I believe that the industry somehow decided that 3-D movies were what audiences wanted. This was possibly an impressive marketing strategy: flood the theaters with 3-D movies and charge extra to view them. There were 3-D dramas, comedies and cartoons. Many of these movies would have earned the same or money without the 3-D effects. In some cases, the 3-D effects did nothing positive for the movie.
Everywhere you turned there was some mention of 3-D technology. Not surprisingly, television manufacturers responded to this surge and offered many models that were capable of bring your home movie watching experience to life. These models can be found in as much abundance as televisions that do not offer the feature.
It was only inevitable that smartphones and tablets would become the next phase. The Neilson Company recently revealed statistical data that indicates that about thirty percent of Americans own a smartphone. Tablet ownership is probably lower but on the rise because they are relatively new on the market with a high price point. This makes me wonder about the demand for 3-D technology using these platforms. Can the 3-D craze make this innovation profitable? I’m not so sure. How many people want to view 3-D movies or play 3-D video games on their phone or tablet? My guess is not as many as LG and other companies hope.
So what’s next? In a few months or maybe even a year, there will be a new offering that promises to outdo another. LG may just be rolling these gadgets out, but there is no telling what else is in store for upcoming products. The gadget world never remains stagnant so maybe it is a good idea to wait before you make a purchase. My suggestion: determine if the upcoming release of these 3-D capable gadgets are something you want to try immediately or if something better might be on the way in a few months.
