If you’re conducting a website redesign, you should take steps to make sure that your new site is SEO friendly. How would you know if your site is ready for a redesign, and what would you need to do to make your site SEO friendly if it was?

Who Should Redesign?

If you’re a business that’s still using the same site you launched five or more years ago, you may want to consider doing a redesign. Web 2.0 is so much more user friendly, along with all the other changes and upgrades to internet technology. You’re doing a disservice to your current clients – and you’re missing out on potential clients – if you don’t revamp your site and implement some of these upgrades.

In fact, the vast majority of small to medium businesses are using individual html or php based pages, which are very difficult to use and maintain. If you’re one of them, you might consider a redesign to a more streamlined and easily manageable content management system.

Becoming SEO Friendly

At the bare minimum, your redesign should transfer your site from html or php based pages to a content management system like WordPress or Joomla. These systems are Google friendly, and the very nature of using them will help you to rank higher in a search index. They are also easy to use, and provide your company with a simplistic way to update your site, add content and basically maintain the redesign once it has been launched.

You should also make sure that your calls to action are placed high on the page. That way your users will see them and know what they are supposed to do with your site. Things like “contact us” and “sign up now” should be placed above the fold – or above the area where the user needs to scroll down to see the rest of the page – in order to be highly effective.

Additionally, make sure your URL is now static instead of dynamic. A static URL contains keywords that are relevant to your site, whereas a dynamic URL is just made up of coding. A static URL is more easily understood by Google, and will help increase your rankings.

Keywords are definitely vital to making your site SEO friendly. Make sure you do your research, and understand what specific terms your potential clients are using, and then implement those terms throughout your site using original, relevant and informative content. This will help Google’s spiders find you, rank you, and deem your business a trusted source of information.
