SEO for Bing and Yahoo

The recent merge of Bing and Yahoo may have you rethinking your SEO strategy, particularly if you’re targeting the two major search engines.

The merger will allow Bing to provide information to Yahoo for search indexes. However, they will each continue to provide the information uniquely. For example Yahoo may provide some additional social media information while Bing will offer a NASDAQ ticker in the search index.

The people that will be hurt by this merger are those who were ranking high for Yahoo. They will most likely see a downturn in traffic. However, those who were already ranking high for Bing will most likely see an increase in traffic, as they gain all of Yahoo’s users.

Targeting Bing and Yahoo with your SEO strategy may not be the most efficient approach however. Google still has the largest market share of internet users by more than twice what Bing and Yahoo combined get. So, if you cater to Bing or Yahoo too much, you may lose some of the headway you made with Google, and thus give up those users.

Regardless of which search engine your SEO strategy targets, it should have four basic principles at its core: Keyword Research, Conversion Optimization, Onsite Optimization and Offsite Optimization.

* Keyword Research is pivotal to search engine optimization. It involves knowing, understanding and implementing the keywords your users are searching for. It can help you optimize all aspects of your site. Without it your SEO strategy will be dead in the water, whether you apply it to Bing, Yahoo or Google.
* Conversion Optimization involves data analysis and discovering the best ways to convert your traffic to leads, and then leads to sales. It requires tracking your leads to find out how they are moving through your site and where they are leaving. Then making the appropriate changes to keep as much traffic on your site as possible.
* Onsite Optimization involves a whole host of things like htaccess settings, meta information, static URLs, keyword implementation and more in order to make sure you’re keeping users at your site.
* Offsite Optimization is how you get people to your site. Things like backlinks and social media mentions are great ways to drive traffic to your business and increase popularity.

As with any SEO strategy, apply these principals, but wait to make any drastic changes as you consider how to move forward after Yahoo and Bing joined forces. SEO is a long and involved process that takes months to fully understand and see the benefits of.
