iPhone 4 Wins Best Mobile Device

iPhone 4 has done it again! Can’t say I’m in the least bit surprised. Recently at Mobile World Congress iPhone 4 walked away with the prestigious “best mobile device award” despite the fact that this year (and last year) Apple was not in attendance at the conference. My thoughts when first learning this information took an immediate leap to skepticism. Something smells fishy here, I thought, who’s behind this? Is it a coincidence that last year Steve Jobs was named the “Mobile Personality of the Year” and this year Apple swipes the big kahuna? I think not. I can’t possibly be the only one suspicious about this win. There is a piece of me that can’t help but wonder if Mobile World Congress Series (which is currently supported by Snapdragon by Qualcomm) is under some type of Apple iPhone spell.

Let’s be logical about this one. The iPhone 4 is practically old news, right? Rumors just begin to circulate this week about the potential summer debut of the iPhone 5 and all of a sudden the 4 claims a prestigious award. This phone debuted last year, for goodness sake (which in the world on technology is ions ago) so why the hype now? The judges at the Mobile World Congress site that the iPhone 4 has a “great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smart phones.” Ok, I get it, the iPhone 4 is the king of all mobile devices to some but what about those cool smartphones (namely the Android) that have been stealing the iPhone 4 shine for the past year.

Let’s not even mention the accomplishments of HTC. Though I’m not a subscriber, I have a great appreciation for what HTC has to offer. This year the mobile company took home the “Device Manufacturer of the Year” award with judges noting that the company has “built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms.” Judges went on to further mention that “it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award.” HTC also went home with a commended note for its Desire smartphone, but who’s counting.

Maybe Angry Birds did it for the iPhone 4. The game did win two awards “Best Mobile App” and “App of the Year on the Apple Platform.” The judges commented that “this is the 50 million plus-selling app that catapulted the benchmark for mobile gaming higher than ever, it is innovative too in terms of in-application monetization.” Perhaps these judges were so enamored by the game that it overshadowed competition. I’m just trying to go with the benefit of the doubt here.

The Mobile World Congress seems to hold a very high esteem for a company that has disregarded them for the past 2 years. I’m not instigating or anything but it looks to me like the Mobile World Congress are Apple fans unnoticed.
