iPad a Good Investment? Maybe not.

Scouring the internet today I came across a very interesting article revealing 5 reasons why NOT to invest in the iPad. Now, I can come up with about 7 reasons on my own but they are probably a lot less technical than the reasons I’ve come across so I’ll share those (perhaps with a flare of my opinion here and there) instead.

For starters, if you know Apple like I know Apple you know that they change generations like undies. You’ve witnessed this with the iPod, the iPhone, and the MacBook so you should expect nothing different with the iPad. As stated by Gizmodo, “When it comes to iPods and iPhones, the lifecycle is easy to grok: Apple produces new models like clockwork.” Guys, the iPad2 is coming soon. No, Apple hasn’t confirmed this yet but you can bet your bottom dollar. They won’t confirm this because they’d like you to continue to buy the version currently on the market. What happens when the iPad 2 comes out, you wonder? Well, Apple wants you to buy that one too. It’s the only way, really. Give it a few months, 3 tops. If it isn’t out by then, I’ll retract this statement, but I won’t have to because it will be.

Another reason NOT to buy the iPad First Generation (I’m going to call it that from here on out just for reassurance) well, it doesn’t have a camera. The nerve! This tablet is about the size of my head and they couldn’t fit a tiny camera in it? I really find that hard to believe. I’m much more inclined to believe that they left the camera out so they can debut it in the iPad 2; much more of an incentive to invest. Come on, people, it’s simple marketing.

Reason #3 why you should hold off on the iPad First Generation: it’s HUGE. If I wanted to carry around my laptop, I’d carry around my laptop. Steve Jobs is quoted as saying the smaller tablet “isn’t sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion.” To me that sounds a bit untrue. This is Apple, for goodness sake, those guys can do anything. Let’s see how this excuse holds up when the miniature iPad 2 is revealed. Bet the size will be “sufficient” then.

Reason #4 why you should just hold off here: it isn’t 4G. The iPad First Generation is available in WiFi only and WiFi-plus-3G models but 4G is not a part of the deal. Come on Apple, every device is 4G now, get with the program. Oh, but I’m sure they will in a month or so, stand by.

Last, but certainly not least on this list of why NOT to get the iPad First Generation: there are other options! Don’t forget Google’s buzz about the Android 3.0. This device is suspected to be a new and improved open source tablet (Apple extremely closed source, of course) with Flash compatibility (unlike iPad First Generation) so this is likely a smarter buy.

My suggestion: wait about 7 years before investing in the iPad. Hopefully by then they would’ve exhausted resources, run out of generations and the price would’ve drastically dropped. Either that or you could always get the iPad2 next month, evaluate its shortcomings and then wait on the iPad3. The options are there, people, it’s solely up to you.
