Having an ancient origin and boasting a tradition of craftsmanship that has forged great works and great artists is inevitable that the world of oriental rugs is rich in curiosity and curious events that have marked the history and the social issue about carpets. Just think of the many oriental tapestries that can be found in many Western homes, many of which date back to the history of Renaissance linked to colonization, and then imports from eastern countries like China and all countries in the Caucasus. Each of these objects has a unique history and unique, particularly as their work is unique and the hand that created them.
Surely one of the anecdotes on the carpets that most online wonder aroused in the contemporary world is certainly one that concerns the world's largest carpet which, true to historical tradition, has Eastern origins. Commissioned in 1996 by Sultan Qaboos Great for decorating the majestic Grand Mosque in Muscat in Oman, this rug has entered history to have passed all primates so far achieved in the creation of the carpets.

The Sultan had ordered to the carpet company not only the realization of the carpet itself, but also in the preliminary study of the size, shape, decoration and its subsequent transport, all in the shortest possible time. Work of gigantic proportions when one considers that the manufacturer as well as develop the project also had to acquire special looms for working and means for transporting the same to the mosque.
The carpet for the Sultan Qaboos would in fact become the world's largest carpet large 4,434 square meters with a width of 60.90 meters and a length of 70.50 meters. The carpet for the construction was divided into 48 pieces weighing a total of ben22 tons. Gigantic work which required the participation of 500 experts in restoration and carpet weavers of carpets and tapestries, to help minimize the time needed, worked in shifts. In addition, many were the obstacles to be circumvented because the structure of the mosque in question is very rich in columns and other decorations that have made even more challenging the whole work. A large collaborative effort that has seen action and work skills of artisans, architects, manufacturing experts, in short, an exercise in collaboration and cooperation in the round.
Impressive was the work of the artisans who created the decorative pattern of the carpet: an elaborate medallion inspired by the dome of the mosque in Isfahan. The execution took place in the province of Khorasan (in northeastern Iran) for a total of 12,000 hours. Work of gigantic proportions which saw its completion in 2000, with regard to the technical side is completed in the assembly of 48 pieces by Iranian expert weavers, and May 5, 2001 with the inauguration of the mosque by the Sultan. The work is still admired in the Grand Mosque in Muscat.
