Filing a dispute with a credit bureau can be a confusing process if you don’t know what to do. That’s where a company like Creditelves can help you navigate through the process and arrive at a satisfying outcome.

Before you can file your dispute and the professionals at Creditelves can help you, you will need to acquire your credit report from the three credit bureaus. They each provide slightly different information, so it’s important to get a report from all three agencies. They are:

* Experian – www.experain.com
* Equifax – www.equifax.com
* TransUnion – www.transunion.com

Or, you can get the information from the annual credit report website at www.annualcreditreport.com.

You may or may not have to pay for your credit report, depending on whether or not this is the first report you’ve requested this year, whether you’ve been denied credit as a result of information in your report, whether you’re employed or not, and things like that. If you do have to pay to get a copy of your credit report, the amount varies by state but won’t be more than $10.

Once you have your report, look for mistakes. Be diligent about checking all the information in your report including your personal information, your financial history and any dated items. You should not find any accounts you don’t recognize, accounts you closed that appear to still be open on your credit report, or late payments that were actually made on time or are older than 7 years. If you do, this is when you’ll need to file a dispute with a credit bureau.

A company like Creditelves can help take the guess work out of this process. They will help you compile your information into a cohesive, professional letter that will stand out from other letters, giving your dispute a chance at being handled quickly. Your letter should include details regarding the error, any documentation that provides hard evidence of the mistake, your personal information and any other pertinent specifics about the inaccuracy on your credit report.

Once the credit bureau reporting the mistake receives your dispute they have 30 days to let you know their decision about your situation. If they agree that a mistake has taken place they will remove it or alter your credit report to show the findings of their research. If this is the outcome it’s your responsibility to ensure they accurately make the change, and tell the other agencies about the change so your credit score is ultimately affected. It is your right to request another credit score free of charge to make sure everything has been put into place accurately.

Should they disagree with you, don’t despair. You still have options, it just makes for a longer process. Creditelves can help you refile your dispute. Or you can approach the original creditor and ask them to help you resolve the issue. You also have the right to add a statement to your credit report about the entry in question. That way, when someone performs a credit inquiry about you, they will see that you have tried to be proactive about improving your credit score, and may be more likely to work with you.
