Buying foam: technical considerations, technical solutions

Buying foam cut to size or in standard packages can involve making complex scientific and technical choices. The best modern foam manufacturers and foam suppliers operate at the cutting edge of excellence in both engineering and product development.

A decision on which sort of foam to buy will be based on two main criteria: choice of basic materials with which to make the foam; and the manufacturing process involved in transforming those basic materials into foam.

Materials used to make foam are generally synthetic polymer-based plastics or various types of synthetic rubber. Different plastics and rubber products have particular advantages when used for different applications.

Some materials used to make foam for example are hydrophilic – meaning that they absorb, or react positively to, water or moisture. Other materials can be hydrophobic – meaning that they repel water.

Similarly, certain materials being able to withstand the effects of oil, sunlight or extreme temperatures, and may be particularly suited for, say, industrial applications; whereas other, more sensitive materials may be more suited for light domestic or personal use.

Once the material has been decided on, transforming that material into foam involves an equally complex series of technical decisions.

All foam is produced by melting the plastic or rubber into a liquid and then introducing into this liquid a blowing agent – a blowing agent being a substance such as a gas which fills the plastic or rubber with air pockets or ‘cells’.

Precision control of this process leads to the production of a variety of foam formats; soft, spongy foam, for example, or perhaps rigid, solid blocks.

In addition, foam can be in either open or closed cell format; meaning either that air or liquid can pass unhindered between cells, or that each cell is structurally isolated from all other cells.

At Technical Foam Services our experts can advise on the most suitable foam for your needs.
