Large Animal Scales

Large animals such as cattle, alpacas, and bison are extremely heavy, with adults regularly weighing hundreds of pounds. Some organizations, such as zoos, have to routinely monitor the weight of even larger animals. However, the pressure exerted on a scale by such a heavy animal can easily cause damage to frame due to capacity overload, if either the scale was not built of a sturdy enough material or the correct capacity was not acquired to begin with.

Industrial quality scales that are suitable for weighing large animals could be in the form of a platform scale of a floor scale. It is important to buy the capacity you will need because these heavy duty scales are not cheap. If you buy too little you will waste your money because the scale will not last very long if it is subject to routine capacity overload. If you buy too much, you lose sensitivity of the instrument.

Platform scales may not be your best option unless you are dealing with younger animals, because they typically have a capacity of up to 1000 lb, and have smaller platofrms. However, a floor scale can be made to accommodate 5 tons (the most common 4’ x 4’ model), 10 tons or even 20 tons. At ArlynScales, we can even custom design a scale for you that will work in your setting for the range of animals that you deal with.

Regardless of the capacity you need, all our scales are made to the highest quality standards. These are:

* Welded steel construction for the most durability.
* No moving parts that can break off and permanently damage the scale’s balance.
* Naturally moisture resistant—giving you protection from rain, spills and animal waste.
* Stainless steel load cells- the most rugged. Unlike more common aluminum load cells, these will not permanently bend or warp because of heavy use or occasional capacity overload.
* Optional ramps to make coaching large animals up onto the scale easier.
* Optional bars to keep the animals in place once they are standing on the platform.
* A large LCD readout that is easy to read. These can be made wireless as well, so that you can view the weight reading without being near the large animal on the platform..
* Zinc –rich coating of the welded steel for added protection against rust.
* Injection molded housing of the digital display for added durability.
* Rubber lining around display for protection from wetness.
* Easy tare, zero, net/gross, and memory functions in the display unit.

At ArlynScales, we can even make your life easier by configuring your digital readout to transmit data remotely to a computer database. If you need a scale to weigh large animals, contact us today.
