Electronic health records are identified as data that is saved on computer systems and relates to the treatment patients receive from healthcare professionals. In the past, these records used to be stored on paper but as the awareness grows many healthcare organizations are finding it much easier to keep the records electronically.

It allows for document sharing. The capability of being able to share files quickly and easily allows the healthcare professionals to be able to better diagnose and treat the patients.

The stored data is easily accessible. With the data on hand at all times it cuts back on time being spent going through paper records. It affords the patient a more efficient service.

Not only is it accessible but it is easy to update. Simple things like changes of address and phone number can be done in real time with no need for the patient of ill out an update form or the administrative staff having to note the information down to update it at a later date. It has improved efficiency and accuracy of patient information tenfold.

Electronic health records makes for easier storage. All that physical space that used to be required for filing cabinets is no longer needed as everything is stored on a computer.
It improves the speed with which one can access a patient's records. It cuts back on the work that the receptionist has to do as the dockets will not have to be prepared for the day as everything is right there on the system. It also cuts back on the possibility of errors being made and notes getting lost.

It is without a doubt a more secure way to keep records. Only the authorized persons will be able to access the files and a backup can be created so that in the event that something happens to current records, a copy will be available.

Overall the intrinsic benefits of electronic health records cannot be ignored. It makes the process easier for everyone involved.
