There are various licenses required for veterinary careers, although there are also entry level jobs in this field. It all depends on what you want to do, how long you want to stay in school and where you want your career to take you. It’s important to know what all the career requirements are before embarking on your professional path in the realm of animal care.

If you are going to become a veterinarian you will definitely need to participate in some serious schooling and complete all the necessary steps to get your license. You will be required to finish a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution of higher learning and pass state licensing exams before you can legally set up shop as a veterinarian. Many veterinarians choose a specialty such as anesthesiology, dentistry, pathology, radiology or surgery. Then you will need to pass a state exam in order to become a licensed veterinary technician or technologist.

If getting a doctorate sounds like too much school for you, perhaps a career as a veterinary technician or technologist is more your speed. Veterinary technologists must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, and veterinary technicians must complete a two-year associate’s degree. Numerous colleges and technical schools around the country offer accredited veterinary technology programs that feature coursework on anatomy, diagnostic equipment, pharmacology, physiology, testing procedures and more.

There are other veterinary careers that do not require formal college education, although people who work in these fields may have degrees. Animal trainers, pet groomers and zoo caretakers can all get their start without finishing years of schooling. Some of these jobs do require professional licensing, though. Pet groomers and animal caretakers usually finish some schooling as well, although this type of program can be completed in as little as two weeks. Other veterinary jobs require two, four, eight or more years of school.

It’s important to know what your options are and what you’re getting into as you embark on the path to a veterinary career. Knowing the education and licenses required for veterinary careers is the first step to a satisfying career in the field of animal care.
