PPC Keyword Research

If you’re getting ready to embark on a PPC campaign on Google AdWords or Microsoft’s adCenter, keyword research is vital to make it successful. A single keyword can cost as much as $80 per click, so it’s important to make sure it’s the right one to drive people to your site.

Here’s where a good strategy is important. If you don’t have a plan for how to execute your PPC campaign effectively, you might as well kiss your PPC money goodbye. Here are a few things you can do to maximize your PPC strategy and effectively practice keyword research.

* Finding those important keywords is essential to a successful PPC campaign. Try tools like Word Tracker or SpyFu, which are both paid tools. For some free resources, try Google’s keyword tool or SEObook.com. Explore them all, and you’ll be able to find keywords that will work well for your specific niche.
* Use long tailed keywords, rather than short ones. For example, “mortgage” is going to cost you a small fortune per click, and is very competitive, so the likelihood that you would get relevant clicks is low. But, “mortgage brokers in Miami” – a long tailed keyword – is much more specific and tailored to your target group, giving you an edge and making your campaign more effective and affordable.
* Make sure that the keywords in your ad match the content on your site, and make sure your landing page coincides with the content. You will lose conversions if this ad à content à landing page loop is broken.
* Along those same lines, give the user what they want. They clicked on your ad for a reason, and if your content isn’t at all related to the ad, you’ll lose conversions. Again, keep the loop intact to get people to your site and keep them there.
* Keywords are a vital part of the process, but they’re also not the only step. For example, you have to make sure you have an optimized landing page to keep users once you attract them. You also have to have an optimized system to allow users to easily move through your site, and eventually get to that important sale. There are a lot of places users can bail out of your site, and you need to make sure and address them all, not only to get traffic, but keep it.

Let’s reiterate the importance of a strategy here. You can’t just start a PPC campaign and let it roam free about the Internet. If you don’t have a plan of attack in place before you begin, your PPC campaign is very unlikely to be successful. It can also fizzle out if you don’t stay on top of important keywords and what users in your target group are searching for, which is why you can’t just let your PPC campaign go. Do you have time to go through all of these steps to make sure you’re doing PPC keyword research effectively, and getting the most clicks you possibly can from your PPC campaign?
