Geriatric Care Nursing Home

A geriatric care nursing home is equipped to deal with the elderly as well as the sick. Their focus is narrower, thus their expertise is richer. If you have an elderly family member who is ready to move somewhere where they can get targeted help to improve their quality of life, then a nursing home specializing in geriatric care should top your list.

Doesn’t the phrase nursing home imply that is it for the elderly? You might be asking. Well, not exactly. Nursing homes are for anyone who needs skilled nursing care, such as people who are recovering from accidents, surgeries, and serious illnesses. This does not necessarily mean they are elderly. What the phrase ‘nursing home’ suggests is a particular level of care.

This level of care denotes something more involved and much more comprehensive than home nursing visits or even assisted living facilities. Patients turn to nursing homes when they cannot ambulate without help, even to get out of bed or go to the bathroom. They will often require round the clock care and the services of a medical doctor to continuously monitor and prescribe medications.

In terms of geriatric housing, if a senior is reasonably healthy or unwilling to leave their own home, they can have various services provided to them. We have all these different types of services listed and explained on our website, such as help with transportation, being able to hire someone to come in and clean, prepare meals, or in general make the senior’s home environment a safe place to move around. You can even get a nurse to come to your home or the home of your elderly family member if they need more than help with simple tasks like bathing, dressing or meal preparation. A nurse can regularly check someone living with a chronic illness and make sure that they are taking their medications if they are non compliant when left to their own devices.

An assisted living facility gives a senior citizen more help, but still allows them a measure of independence because help (physical, medical, etc) is there if they need it, but not forced on them if they don’t.

A geriatric nursing home on the other hand assumes that a senior can no longer live alone or do many of the things they need to in their daily lives unassisted. They can be bathed, fed, dressed, entertained, helped with toileting, helped to move about and more, and also receive regular medical care from staff members tasked to ensure that their medical conditions are being taken care of in every detail, that their prescriptions are being dispensed and monitored, and that they get routine checks by a qualified physician.

At GeriCareFinder, we can help you to research about and find a geriatric nursing home in your area that will help an elderly family member regain what is positive in their lives, by taking the uncertainty out of their medical and physical care, and by giving them an environment where they can feel safe and interact socially with other seniors.
