If you’re thinking about a civil service career you may be wondering, “Just where do homeland security professionals work?” With everything going on in the world, this career continues to become more in demand year after year. There are obviously jobs that entail protecting Americans from terrorist threats and keeping our borders safe, but there is much more to it than that. This article will expand on some of the possible homeland security careers and what it takes to get a degree in this field.

If you are interested in homeland security you will have career opportunities that deal with protecting the American public from natural and manmade disasters and protecting our borders from those entering illegally or with malicious intent. You may find jobs in the federal government, military and state governments. You may also find work as a consultant dealing with the needs of the private sector such as cyber security, occupational safety, preparing for emergencies and transportation security. A degree that prepares you for a homeland security job may also prepare you for a number of seemingly unrelated private and public sector jobs.

So you clearly have many career choices in the homeland security field, but how do you get there? There are specific homeland security degree and certificate programs that have emerged within the criminal justice field of study that can prepare you for all these jobs. These programs may focus on analyses, critical thinking, history, philosophy and teamwork skills, which are all important for homeland security jobs. If you choose to pursue one of these academic programs at a college or online university you can expect to learn all about our legal system and other systems around the world and in the United Nations. You will also learn about cross cultural and non-western history, ethics, risk evaluation and analyses, statistics and some other scientific studies.

If you want to learn more about where homeland security professionals work, you may want to pay a visit to a local college that offers this type of degree program. There is also a great deal of information online and from the Department of Homeland Security.
