New-Gate in New England: Exhausting Time Connecticut Model
Connecticut was once home to America’s greatest dungeon: the mine/jail generally known as New-Gate.
The very 1st state prison within the United States was based earlier than there have been states in any respect, not to mention united ones. Connecticut’s New-Gate Prison, initially a copper mine, was started it’s position as a detention heart in the fall of 1773 because the colony’s public “gaol” and workhouse. It was known as New-Gate after the fearsome jail of the same name in England. During the early years of the American Revolutionary Warfare it held captured loyalists and torries. It was also a Prisoner of Struggle facility in the American Civil War.
The people of Connecticut have been no less involved with price range over-run within the late 18th century than we're right now, so the supposed “self-sufficiency” of New-Gate was very appealing. Copper may still be mined from the dank tunnels that made up the jail, allowing prisoners to pay for their own upkeep. In addition, the structure of the jail, i.e. two shafts, a few iron lure-doorways and a veritable dungeon of mine tunnels, meant that a minimal workers would be needed. This included the warden or “Keeper” three guards or “overseers” and some skilled miners, paid from the prisoners salaries, to instruct the prisoner on the finer factors of copper mining.

Certainly such a prison was a mannequin of effectivity and security; it’s a disgrace then that the very 1st prisoner escaped in less than a month.
On December twenty second of 1773, John Hinson was the 1st man incarcerated in Connecticut’s new New-Gate Prison. Little is thought about Hinson, aside from that he was 20 year-old and stood 5’6” tall. Even his crime has been forgotten, although it should have been severe; the New-Gate was reserved for burglars, horse-thieves, counterfeiters, highwaymen and different such hard-cases.
What is thought is that on January 9th John Hinson escaped, probably using his compact size and the vigor of youth to climb up a 70-foot properly shaft, but more probably aided by an confederate on the surface with a length of rope and a bit of money to bribe an overseer. One somewhat romantic (and unsubstantiated) tale includes his beautiful ladylove coming to his rescue. The one certainty is that if he was ever imprisoned in Connecticut once more, then these information have been lost.
Three months later three extra convicts escaped, leading local authorities to grudgingly admit that some type of wall could also be necessary. With the addition of a stone enclosure and a few extra guards the prison turned far safer, though it never quite lived up to its initial boast of being escape-proof.
For the subsequent 54-yr of its operation some 800 laborious-timers lived and labored in Connecticut’s largest state-operated dungeon. It wasn’t till 1827 that the New-Gate was deserted as a permanent detention facility, although it did see restricted military use within the Civil War. A new, nominally less medieval prison was built in Wethersfield and the prisoners had been transferred there. Presumably the prisoners regarded this as an improvement of their situation. No matter how dismal the brand new prison was, at the least it wasn’t subterranean.
