Tool Room Lathes

A lathe is a tool used to machine very hard materials in industrial machining applications; they were originally meant to machine metal parts. It is basically a rigid machine that removes material from a rotating work-piece by the linear movement of a cutting tool such as a drill bit. Though intended for use with metal, their versatility has made them commonplace in applications that machine plastic parts and other substances.

Every lathe has some basic components, including a tool room lathe. They are a headstock, tailstock, carriage and bed. The headstock is the part that holds the main spindle and that also has functions to change the speed or gears. It must have the most durable housing because of the pressure exerted on it by its cutting functions, and it must also be able to induce harmonic vibrations throughout the body of the machine to avoid distortion. The tailstock is mounted on the spindle’s axis directly opposite the headstock. It holds the various tools needed by the machine to work its materials. The carriage refers to the movement of drill bit (or cutting implement). The bed is a heavy duty base connected to the headstock that ensures that the carriage and the tailstock are aligned parallel to the axis of the headstock.

As stated before, a tool room lathe is a kind of center lathe. (Adding to the confusion, it’s useful to know they’re also called bench lathes or engine lathes). Center lathes are used by the general machinist or even by hobbyists, since they can sometimes be mounted on a bench and feature automated feed to the cutting tool, (in the mechanical sense). They eventually evolved from purely mechanical tools to fully geared, high speed electronic tools due to innovation in automobile technology.

However, a tool room lathe has been enhanced and optimized for tool room use on a shop floor. It is not appropriate for amateur hobbyists. It is the most advanced, top-of-the-line version of a center lathe, often featuring the best optional functions of lesser models. These extra features could include a collet closer, a taper attachment, the highest accuracy technology available, the smoothest running design, and selective assembly. These refinements mean that tool room lathes are naturally more expensive than general center lathes. Different manufacturers of tool room lathes compete based on quality, not price, because they know that any machining operation needing one has highly complex needs.

Here at machinery Values, we have a variety of tool room lathes that can meet your industrial machining needs, whether you are machining metal or plastic. Our selection includes used models as well; tool room lathes have a very long lifespan and are often in very good condition even after a decade. When we get them in stock, they don’t last long because they are very reasonably priced. Obtaining a new one can be out of reach or even unnecessary, given the fact that tool room lathes are built to be tough.
