If you are considering how to become an ambulatory nurse you may be well on your way to a rewarding, challenging, important and all-consuming career in the medical field. You will need to become a registered nurse before going into this specialization, and then you will be able to work in ambulatory settings, community environments, healthcare facilities, schools, workplaces and other surroundings where patients need urgent care. You will need to be able to make focused, rapid decisions on large numbers of patients without skipping a beat – are you up for the challenge?

As an ambulatory nurse you will most likely work in an outpatient setting where large numbers of patients are being seen, each for only a short time. You will need to be able to think fast and remain prepared for the unexpected. Some days you may focus more on wellness and prevention, and on other days you may treat seriously ill, injured and dying patients. It is tough work; it will always be challenging, but the rewards of helping people who need it so urgently are undeniable. Your skills will also be in demand all over the country with this specialization.

You can enter the world of nursing with an Associate’s Degree to RN, hospital diploma or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Most nurses go for the BSN because it is most widely accepted by employers and other institutions of higher learning for those who want to pursue graduate study later on. Then you will need to get as much experience as possible in this specialization through hands on training and internships while in school and on-the-job training once you’ve graduated. It’s a good idea to join a professional association such as the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN). This is the specialty nursing association for ambulatory care nurses with a mission of advancing the art and science of ambulatory care nursing.

Once you are working in the field as an ambulatory care nurse you can expect to make somewhere near the median salary of $44,000 with full benefits, plus plenty of room for advancement. Is this the career for you?
