The common misconception
A lot of people believe that scholarships are only for people who excel academically. While this may apply to scholarships in general, it?s not exactly the basis anymore for awarding people a scholarship. In times of financial hardships, every form of financial assistance counts and getting a scholarship for you or for your children can go a long way.
How can scholarships help me and my children?

Scholarships are a form of financial assistance awarded to any individual who excels academically or in non academic activities like music, sports, cosmetology, theater arts, etc. The scholar, or the person who receives the scholarship, is able to go to school for free or at a reduced price because the organization that awards the scholarship will shoulder all the education expenses. However, the scholar is obligated to maintain a minimum GPA or grade average in order to retain his or her scholarship. If a scholar fails in one or two subjects, then the scholarship is revoked.
What kinds of non academic scholarships are available?
There are a lot of scholarships being awarded to people who excel in non academic activities like:
1.) Music scholarships for college ? Music scholarships are awarded to those who excel in music, whether it?s playing an instrument or singing. These scholarships are usually awarded by the government, your local college or university and other private organizations like a music school.
2.) College athletic scholarships ? These athletic scholarships for college are awared to individuals who excel in the field of athletics. However, these scholarships tend to be more strict with their requirements than ordinary scholarships because of the applications they receive every year. Athletic scholarships won?t also guarantee you a full ride into college ? meaning you?ll only be going to college at a reduced price. These scholarships are usually awarded by your local colleges and universities, the federal government and even some private organizations who share an interest in the field of athletics.
3.) Scholarships based on skills ? There are also scholarships based on the passion and willingness of the individual to enhance their skills in a particular industry. For people wanting to become hair stylists, make up artists, etc, they can apply for scholarships for cosmetology schools.
It?s not really that difficult to locate these scholarships. All you need to do is dedicate a few hours on the Internet or in the library to research about where you can find the nearest organization offering these scholarships. Securing your children?s educational future is probably the best thing that you can give them in these challenging financial times.
