Did you ever notice how some cats’ fur can look so sleek and nice while some look all clumped up? Cats are generally clean creatures. They are always licking themselves to keep its fur clean. However, it is still important for the owners to groom their cats occasionally to keep its hair from being all tangled up.
If you have cats with long hair such as a Persian, you will need to spend more time to groom it compared to cats with short hair. It will take hours to groom and keep its hair nice and sleek. Otherwise, it will easily get tangled and form mats. The only way to remove mats is to shave it.

Cats with short hair require much less maintenance compared to a long haired cat, although it still requires grooming occasionally. So, if you are a very busy person or just lazy to spend too much time grooming a cat, you should consider getting a cat with short hair.
Grooming a cat using a brush or comb is not only about making the cat looks nice. By grooming your cat, you remove all the loose hair from its body which the cat would have swallowed if it licks itself. Usually cats will be able to cough up the indigestible hair which has clumped up inside its body as hairballs. However, there are instances where too much hair was swallowed, causing it to block the cat’s intestines. In such cases, the only way to solve the problem will be to operate the cat to remove the hairballs.
When you start to groom your cat, the important thing is your cat must enjoy it. So, make it fun for the cat. Gently stroke your cat before you begin. Brush her lightly with a comb or brush. Make sure that you brush lightly. Otherwise, it can be painful for the cat if the hair is tangled up. Most cats love the feeling of being groomed gently.
Ensure that your cat is comfortable throughout the grooming process. Do not attempt to make the cat sit or stay in an uncomfortable pose longer than necessary. Keep the grooming session short, preferably under ten minutes per session. It is not necessary that you have to groom all parts of the cat in one session. You can spread out the sessions over a few days to groom different parts of the cat.
By grooming your cat regularly, you can avoid the trouble of having to shave or untangle bad mats in the long run.
