Industrial drum scales need to be able to accomplish one thing: to easily and effectively weigh cylindrical metal and plastic drums used to store a host of different materials. This is easier said than done, as many models are not built to actually do this effectively.
Making sure you pick a long-lasting industrial drum scale requires you to think about what your needs are. Will you be continuously wheeling drums on and off? Probably. Are your drums carrying a particularly heavy substance? Maybe. Do you have forklifts or pallet jacks that are going to trample it? Possibly.

Well then you need to know that the best ones are made from durable stainless steel load sensors. This means that they will last a lot longer than the typical aluminum load cells that cannot withstand such rugged use. The frame also needs to be fully welded; if not, you may end up with a device that cannot absorb the amount of shock you are going to put on it, and worse, one that will actually fall apart with use. With a price tag of hundreds of dollars, chances are you don’t want to have to buy a replacement too often. This type of equipment is simply too expensive to have to deal with that issue.
Will your drums be filled with highly corrosive materials such as liquefied carbon dioxide, liquid hydrogen, phosphate, fluoride chemicals, sodium hydroxide, and so one? If so, you will want to make sure your industrial drum scale is coated with a corrosive resistant material. Otherwise, your scale might become corroded, not to mention toxic and dangerous, and you will end up having to make another investment to replace it.
Other things you want to consider are the actual logistics of your daily weighing needs. Does the ramp have too steep a slope to get your drums on? Does it have ramps on both sides to make the transportation on loads on and off it easy for your employees? Many industries involve load weighing tasks that have to be managed by hand. Pick a model that is not only welded for durability, but one that is no more than 2 inches high, and with attachable ramps to make your life easier.
Lastly, make sure you check out the load sensors to ensure that is has load cells made from stainless steel; aluminum ones don’t last as long. If your model needs to be rugged, make sure the display has a welded frame like the platform. Additionally, epoxy exterior coating allows the scale to be both more durable and water resistant. Chances are that if you’re looking for an industrial drum scale, you will be using it in areas that may get wet.
Prices for industrial drum scales vary, but they do not usually start under $1000. Obtaining one with all the best features (described above), that will provide the longevity you’re looking for in an expensive piece of equipment, might be hard if you don’t know where to look. Consider getting a highly rated model directly from the manufacturer, so you can save money because of those factory direct prices. If you need more than just one high quality unit, this could easily save you thousands.
