Normally, the cutters in a vertical milling machine is held in the spindle and rotates on its axis, while either the spindle itself gets extended or the table is raised or lowered to accommodate drilling and plunge cuts. However, a FADAL vertical machining center that utilizes computer numerical control basically gives the equipment’s spindle the ability to move vertically along its Z axis.
This extra degree of movement makes possible additional kinds of cutting, such as 2.5 cutting (relief sculpture), die sinking and engraving.
