A power transfer switch is needed if you want to switch from a primary power source to a secondary or tertiary power source. It is also employed in many electrical power distribution systems across the world. There are four types of operational modes in switches: manual transfer switches, automatic transfer switches, non-automatic transfer switches, and bypass/isolation transfer switches.

There are three categories into which the power switching operation of switches may be separated. These are the Open Transition, Closed Transition, and Closed Transition Soft Load. The Open Transition is the Break-before-Make operation, while the Closed Transition is the Make-before-Break operation. In the Closed Transition Soft Load, both sources are in parallel position, and can be as such indefinitely.

In every transfer switch, you will see three components. It has the Power switching device to move the load circuits to and from the power source. The Transfer Logic Controller is used to monitor the condition of the sources of the power, and provide the control signals to the power-shifting device. Supplying operational power to the controller and switching device is the function of the Control Power Source.

Besides the Residential sectors, the Agricultural, Construction, and Industrial sectors also benefit from these switches. With the Residential type of switches, the homeowners are guaranteed to have protection in case of loss of power during a utility power interruption, personal injury and generator damage, loss of computer data from prolonged interruption, property loss because of freezing, and accidental connection of a generator to a utility.
