You surely are missing a lot by not taking advantage of the marketing power of the humble post cards.

At first designing a post card may be difficult for you. There are a lot to be considered in its design. Ever noticed the light effects that occur on paper surfaces when a light reflects on them? Some look intense while others look plain and dull. This effect is actually caused by the substance that is applied in the paper. The paper goes through a treatment that enhances its physical appearance. This treatment is referred to as paper coating. Done well, a coating can give paper an exceptionally attractive look that brings a post card printing into new design heights.

Paper coating can actually be used for different reasons. For some people, a coating is used to get a smooth paper finish that gives the paper a cleaner, more professional look. While there are others that use coating for the protection that it can give paper against harsh elements like water and rust. Below are some of the examples of coatings that you can use when printing your post cards:

• Varnish – varnish, the same coating that is also used to coat wood, is a colorless ink. It is applied to the paper surface to give it and attractive gloss appeal. Aside from that, it also gives protection for the prints against harsh elements such as dust, water. And just like other coatings, varnish costs less. Varnish can be applied together or after the other inks are put on the paper. There are three kinds of varnish: dull, satin, and gloss.

• Laminate — laminates comes in two types: liquid and film. Liquid laminate uses clear liquid placed over the paper and dried to create a clear coating. Film laminate make use of a clear plastic film that is coated over the paper. Both film and liquid laminate uses gloss and matte finish.

• Aqueous coating – aqueous solution is water based. This type of postcard printing coating gives a considerable protection to the paper stock against all harsh elements such as dust, scratch and especially water. This coating gives more gloss to the paper that varnish. Because this is based on water, aqueous costing is environment friendly and provides more protection than other types of coating. But this coating is more expensive than varnish and cannot let certain types of pen to write through the coating.

• Last but not the least is the UV coating – UV coating is one of the most utilized processes of coating paper nowadays especially for those who have extra budget. This UV coating usually gives out more intense shine compared to the other types of coating. To create a UV coat, a clear liquid is placed over the paper and exposed to UV light. UV coating is available both in dull or glossy coating and provides superb paper protection. The only drawback of this type of coating is that it cannot be recycled.
