The mountains, for many people, mean relax: those who have a house in the Dolomites, or book a residence in Cadore, spend there week-ends among sports, walks and relax, enjoying the beauty of the mountain landscape and the tranquillity of the day to day life in the mountain villages.
Holidays on the snow represent a breath of fresh air during the long winter; short week-ends or entire weeks when there’s a chance for it grant relax and fun, w3hich everyone lives in a different way: sports on the snow, extreme or not, hiking, trekking, but also relaxing walks along the paths in the woods or in the villages...
If you choose to sleep in Cortina, one of the most appreciated cities in the Veneto mountains, you’ll be able to follow different paths on the Dolomites, from which you’ll have the chance to admire the natural beauty of the landscape surrounding you.
The Dolomites are a unique mountain chain: it formed from the marine detritus hundreds of millions years ago, when the sea wetted that area; the tectonic movements made the rest, raising the accumulations of shells, algae and corals and forging those that nowadays we call Dolomites, after Déodat de Dolomieu, who studied their geological history and composition.

On the 26th June 2009 the Dolomites have been declared a natural heritage by UNESCO: this confirms their uniqueness and their importance in the world naturalistic panorama. The Dolomites chain is extended in the provinces of Bolzano, Trent, Vicenza, Verona, Pordenone, Udine and Belluno, being the major part of the chain in the territory of the latter province, in the northern Veneto.
In the winter season 2010/2011 there will probably be a drop in the arrival of Italian skiers, because they are still suffering from the economical crisis, but the Italian excursionists will increase a little: the number of Italians in the winter holidays, then, in the end will be more or less static. The stranger tourists, though, will probably increase about 5%.
The Italian skiers are about three and a half million; among them there are about one million and 400 thousand experts, one million and 300 thousand amateurs and about 800 thousand, instead, go to the mountains in the high season periods to use their equipment and take a stab at alpine skiing.
The sports on the snow are many, and those who go for a skiing winter holiday look at the same time for relax and adrenaline: the holiday relax, the adrenaline of the more and more difficult ski runs. The great part of winter tourists choose ski runs, 66.8%, while just 8.2% prefer the cross-country skiing. Snowboarders are about 20.8%, while 4.2% choose to try other disciplines.
Get ready, then: winter is coming up, and it will arrive, as always, with its special moments that snow lovers wait all year long for. Hence, prepare your skis, snowboards, sleighs...the skiing holiday week is waiting for you!
