The Value of Recycled Paper

One of the largest components of trash in today's society is paper. The call to use of recycled paper has been stepped up in order to compensate for the growing trash. We can find high quality grades of recycled paper that make it compatible with worplace printers and copiers, and fax machines.

The very first paper mills were invented in 1690 in Philadelphia. Original paper mill fashioned paper from recycled cotton & cloth from rags. It was not until 1800s that the producers of paper took a cue from the Egyptian papyrus and made paper from trees. For them, the supply of trees would be infinite. But presently, this natural resource has dwindled through the years making us think of the future consequences.

Recycled paper is currently being used widely for printed materials like magazines, newspapers, books, postal mail, hankies & hand towels, packaging, etc. They may not look very nice in terms of quality but they are being used for exclusive letterheads, brochures and calling cards. Dull color has achieved a classy effect into it. Today's recycled paper has become comparable in quality with to virgin paper products. The only negative aspect is that the production of recycled paper costs much the same as the production of virgin paper. Yet this expense outweighs the beneficial effects that it makes to our environment.

About 10% of the paper being produced in the market today is recycled. The other ninety percent still uses virgin paper for their printing needs. The reason being, some poor quality products cause paper jams in printers and other priting devices. This is because the fibers in paper that has been recycled have a lot of impurities.

However, there are certain types of these products that are of good quality, that is, tree-free & chlorine-free. This refers to paper produced from fiber from cotton, hemp or kenaf. Chlorine-free is paper recycled and bleached with chlorine. There are types of paper that have been recycled which fall under the category of digested chlorine-free. This uses a method that is friendly to the environment.

Though it is much easier to burn the paper in our trash, this can deplete our ozone layer. You will be protecting the trees and reducing air pollution when you use paper that has been recycled. And, paper can be recycled an infinite number of times.

Paper in the trash which is dumped into the landfills generate considerable levels of methane gas, which adds up to the global warming.

Packing it into bales and having it collected by recycling plants is one method of recycling paper.
