Be very careful in selecting the color of your website as it is the most important factor. Keep it simple yet appealing in appearance. Websites that have an unprofessional look, are designed by unprofessional designers who use many colors altogether in the site. As far as background is concerned white is the most widely used color and safest option to choose. Use decent colors in the website to make it look soothing to the eyes yet delivering information to the target audience.

Content is very essential part of any website, no matter what your site deals into you cannot imagine it without content. A website maybe very attractive looking with best of design techniques but if the content been posted is not comprehensive than your visitors would get disappointed. So write the content with which your target audience can connect with and get the information they want from you.
While developing your website ask the developer to keep it light so that loading time is not high. All computer systems around the world do not have fast internet connection. Many countries have only 1 MBPS net speed, while some have dial-up connection only. People who surf the web do not like to send much time waiting for the site to load.
An ideal website is easy to access and user-friendly. When a visitor has to click on too many links, it would surely irritate them. They would choose to leave the site and would not come again. Also make it sure if you have kept some links on your website, than it should not come in their way in the reading material.
Limit the number of pop-ups that occur in a website. If the number is more, it would irritate the visitors and they would quit. When used intelligently and in limit pop-ups can be a great marketing tool. They should be used at the right place and occur at the right time.
If you follow such basic points than risk of getting failed online would decrease immensely and you would have greater control over your website.
