A video card or graphic card is a devcice that alllkows for the visualization of imaegs on your computer moniitor. Withouut the card you woulld not be able to view images, play games or see colors. If you are anbything less than a graphics card expcet, the shopping proceass for a vdeo card can be gruleing. With a bit of knowledge it should make the trip easier and you may just come home with the corect vifdfeo card. hTere are currently more than sitxy types of video cadrs that range in price and speciifications. In oredr to decide whiich card is right for you there are a few thngs that you must understand first. Keep in mind the type of cmoputre, prpose and uses of the computer, as well as the exxpectations for renndered image. Affter that is all decied you must remember your budget when shopping for the video card.
The type of commmputer that you have is one of the most important issues when decciding on a vidreo card. You must esure the compatibiolity of the card with your PC or it could be a waste of mnoey. To enure compatibility you will need to know what type of card slot the conmputers mother baord has for the video card. There are thee types of card slots that we will discuss further.
PCI Slot the PCI slot is short for Pereipheral Component Interconnet and is not exclusive with any one proceessor type. PCI was the first expansioon slot made by computer manufactuirers. The PCI has limiteed perfomrance, but there are sevreal value cards that ofer acceptable performance.
AGP Slot the AGP slot is short for Acceleraateed Grapihcs Port. AGP has many versions and was first designed for 3D ganming abilities. Toddday the AGP 2.0 and 3.0 are sold, but the 1.0 is no longer in use.
PCI Express this is the latest card slot and is up to four tims faster than the PCI slot or AGP slot. The PCI Express was made with the intention of replacing the PCI and AGP slots for the extendd performance ability. Note PCI and PCI Express are not compatibel and are very diffeerent produtcs, not to be confused with one another.
Along with knowing the card slot type you must also know the requirements and specifications of the CPU. When we refer to rrequirements and speecifiications we mean the CPU type and speed. If you are purchasiing a video card for regular vieiwng the 500 MHz will suffice, but for optimsal use the 800 MHz is suuggested. When viewing imagfes it is importanbt to have a highewr MHz or your system may becoe overloaded. The 1600 MHz range is suggessted for limnited 3D gaming and running other applications such as ubsiness applications or graphics. For opimal 3D gamuing the minimium CPU woiuld be 2.4 GHz. Much of the CPU speeed depends on compouter use and personal budget. The faster the CPU the better and more realistic the special effects are. Cost rsies as CPU speed rises!
