Cosmetic Surgery Scars

More people are making the decision to receive cosmetic surgery. There is a procedure to improve upon almost any feature you feel is deficient—rhinoplasty, liposuction, tummy tucks, breast augmentation, face lifts, Botox, skin augmentation, you name it. These are some of the most common. Although cosmetic surgeons do their best to create only minimal scars, cosmetic surgery scars are inevitable.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there are steps you should take to ensure your selection of only the most reputable, competent cosmetic surgeon for your procedure.

* Select a surgeon that is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
* Choose a cosmetic surgeon that has at least five years of experience. Two of the five years should be in plastic surgery exclusively.
* Although some people prefer to select a surgeon that specializes in the type of procedure they want, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends you select a professional that has training in all sorts of procedures.
* Select a cosmetic surgeon that practices in an accredited medical institution. Oftentimes, medical aftercare is necessary post cosmetic procedure.
* All plastic surgeons should complete continuing education courses. Ask for proof of this—especially concerning innovations in technology and patient safety—before choosing your doctor.
* Your surgeon should have an American Board of Plastic Surgery certification.

Of course consult your doctor before taking pre or post-operative medication. But there are some herbal supplements thought to reduce trauma after surgery, thus minimizing your cosmetic surgery scars.

* Medical grade Arnica comes in both gel and pill form. It’s been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory agent and as an ingredient to reduce bruising and swelling.
* The enzyme Bromelain is extracted from pineapple stems. Like Arnica, it has been used as an anti-bruising, anti-inflammatory agent.

Never take any medications without consulting your cosmetic surgeon; however, these homeopathic supplements may help reduce your chances of deeper scarring after cosmetic surgery.

Following the operation, once the wounds have fully healed and scar tissue begins to develop, it’s important to begin addressing them right away, while the tissue is still reforming itself.

Use a vitamin E or vitamin K cream multiple times daily. Both help speed the healing of bruised skin, improve the smoothness of the surface and increase the skin’s elasticity. There are also creams formulated especially for minimizing the appearance of scars. Silicone patches, when placed over scars and used over time, can also help reduce the visibility of scars.

Scarring is something that must be expected when you decide to go under the knife. Thankfully, there have been many advances in procedures, patient safety and technology since cosmetic surgery moved into the mainstream. Certain surgeries, like the closed rhinoplasty, leave no scars at all. While others, such as liposuction, leave small, barely visible ones. With proper preparation, a skilled surgeon and diligent treatment of your cosmetic surgery scars, it’s possible to render scars nearly invisible following surgery.
