Today, being macho does not mean avoiding the shower. Nowadays, a new breed of man has arisen. But before we look into this new lifestyle, let us trace back man's evolution.
Men were used to the great outdoors especially during the days of the American frontier where water was a luxury. Man made his home where the buffaloes roam and the deer and antelopes play, or so went the song. Of course, during those days, man had no choice. It was a matter of survival. And he had to do a lot of hard work, clearing the land, planting his crops, and tending his domesticated animals. He just had to do so much work that he does not have time for himself. Maybe during special occasions like thanksgiving or Christmas day. His facial hairs were made to stay long because it helped him keep warm.

Maybe he even deliberately steered clear of bathing because the bugs tended to avoid him when he smelled like a cow.
Then the industrial revolution came and man's focus was shifted from the farm to the factory. As usual, there was a still a lot of work to do. Immigrants started coming to America to work the factories in the cities. Cities started to become densed. Water became hard to come by. Man had no need of bathing and grooming. What for when he only dirtied himself with grease or whatever else he did in the factory.
When Hollywood came, they glamorized the Old West. Hollywood actors portrayed the cowboy as a hero fit to be emulated. These actors' roles defined the woman's view of masculinity. Machismo was misconstrued as not having to take a bath. But fans were oblivious of the fact that the actors themselves started the metrosexual lifestyle. You see, the stars kept themselves well-groomed to keep their bankability.
Nowadays, the times have changed. Gone are the days when man had to toil hard in order to eat. He now has become confident with his future and he can now think of his personal hygiene. He started to flourish on climate controlled environments so that he doesn't need facial hair. As a matter of fact, he doesn't need hair at all. Do you ever wonder why a shaved pate is very hip nowadays? He seldom or never encounters any bugs, thus, he isn't worried about smelling good within the climate controlled environments. He adopts a metrosexual lifestyle to increase his bankability by taking a hint from those Hollywood stars.
